PRESS RELEASE: Global Philadelphia Association to Host Philadelphia’s 6th Annual World Heritage City Celebration Honoring NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell

ONE-ON-ONE VIRTUAL FIRESIDE CHAT WITH MITCHELL MODERATED BY NBC NEWS’ KRISTEN WELKER

On September 9 the former Philadelphia journalists sit down for a virtual fireside chat at the 2021 Philadelphia World Heritage City Celebration.

PHILADELPHIA (Aug. 31, 2021) – Global Philadelphia Association (GPA) honors Andrea Mitchell, NBC News chief foreign affairs correspondent, chief Washington correspondent and host of MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports” who will be joined by NBC News’ Kristen Welker, co-anchor of “Weekend Today” and NBC News chief White House correspondent, for an exclusive virtual fireside chat at the 6th annual 2021 Philadelphia World Heritage City Celebration.

This year’s event will be held in-person on September 9, 2021 at 6 p.m. in the Wanamaker Building’s Crystal Tea Room at 100 Penn Square East, Philadelphia.

Mitchell started her career in journalism with KYW Radio and KYW-TV in Philadelphia. She has since been honored for her distinguished reporting, receiving the lifetime achievement award at the 40th annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards, the Los Angeles Press Club’s Joseph M. Quinn Lifetime Achievement Award, the International Radio and Television Society Foundation’s Giant of Broadcasting and Electronic Arts Honor, the International Women’s Media Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the Freedom of the Press Award from the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the sixth annual Washington Women in Journalism Awards.

Welker, another Philadelphia native, began her career at WCAU-TV, NBC’s Philadelphia owned and operated station, where she anchored the NBC 10 weekend newscasts and started as a general assignment reporter in April 2005.  She joined “Weekend TODAY” as co-anchor in January 2020 and has covered three presidential administrations for the network. During the 2020 general presidential election, Welker moderated the final presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and now-President Joe Biden in October 2020.

This year’s event will commemorate six years of Philadelphia’s World Heritage City project, which highlights the global heritage and impact of the region. Following internal entertainment acts, guests are invited to enjoy cocktails before the virtual fireside chat presentation with Mitchell and Welker. They will discuss the state of journalism, Mitchell’s storied career, and their experiences as women in media.

“Our World Heritage City Celebration highlights the diversity of our region, celebrating our heritage, and showcasing the significance of connection,” said Robert J. McNeill, Global Philadelphia Board Chair and Greater Philadelphia Managing Partner for Deloitte LLP. “Having the opportunity to present a virtual fireside by Andrea Mitchell and Kristen Welker is truly an honor. This city witnessed the birth of their journalism careers. We are particularly happy to honor Andrea for her remarkable reporting as the 2021 Philadelphia World Heritage honoree.”

According to Zabeth Teelucksingh, executive director, Global Philadelphia Association, “This year, we are thrilled to welcome guests back in-person to the World Heritage City Celebration to witness this exciting virtual discussion between two incredibly prominent women who have helped paved the way for other young females in journalism. These two powerful women leaders with Philadelphia ties also help to personify our first sustainable development goals public art project - SDG5,” she said.

Funds raised from the World Heritage City Celebration enable GPA to play a vital role in our region by focusing on the four critical initiatives of our World Heritage City Project: education, preservation, building awareness, and extending our global reach. In addition, it will support the organization’s work in this region toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals aimed at the issues of poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice.
