At age 11, Michael spent a year in Norway with his family. He attended a Norwegian school and began his immersion into Norwegian culture, mainly through the new sports introduced to him. He would not return for 16 years and through that and subsequent visits he developed an appreciation for the country, people and culture, although he is not of Norwegian descent. He is reunited with friends and gains new experiences.

Power Up Gambia's mission is to provide reliable electricity and water to healthcare facilities in The Gambia, West Africa through solar energy. Imagine a hospital without electricity, nurses having to tend to patients, deliver babies and set IV lines by candlelight. No refrigeration for blood banks. Emergency surgeries would be impossible. Children in respiratory distress would have no supplemental oxygen from oxygen concentrators. Drugs and vaccines dependent on refrigeration would be ruined. But solar power can change this. Power Up Gambia, with its mission to provide reliable, responsible electricity and water to health facilities in western Gambia serves to both increase access to health care for poor people and to reduce the toll of "modernization" on our planet. This work succeeds in uniting the two great struggles of our time: the struggle for social justice and that for ecological justice.

Meet Susan Jacobson, CEO of Jacobson Strategic Communications and Former Chair of the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia. Jacobson also plays a leadership role as a Commissioner on the Governor’s Pennsylvania Commission for Women and Vice Chair on the National PBS Foundation Board. Jacobson has received a litany of accolades, including the Power 100, Philadelphia Business Journal’s (PBJ) Most Admired CEO, PBJ’s Women United Award, Greater Philadelphia United Way’s Women of Distinction Award, PBJ’s Woman Entrepreneur of the Year, the Stevie Award for America's Fastest Growing Private Companies, Inc. 5000, Philly Power 100, City and State PA, Living Legacy Award, and the Urban Affairs Coalition.

Global Conversation with Mitchell Little

Mitchell Little is the executive director at Philadelphia’s Office of Community Empowerment and Opportunity. A native Philadelphian, Mitchell’s role is to oversee the work that is done in the office that focuses on improving economic mobility opportunities for Philadelphians impacted by poverty. 

Since 1964, the office has been focused on economic empowerment, evolving from a community service-based approach to one that invests in and advocates for successful anti-poverty solutions.

A Global Conversation with Loree Jones

Global Philadelphia’s 2021 Globy Award for Community Leadership this year goes to Loree Jones. Loree has served in top leadership positions in the nonprofit, higher education and government sectors, including Managing Director, or chief operating officer, of the City of Philadelphia, chief of staff for Rutgers University—Camden and chief of external affairs for the School District of Philadelphia. She is currently Chief Executive Officer of Philabundance, a hunger relief agency serving 9 counties in southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. We had the chance to speak with Loree about her distinguished work, the international diversity of Philadelphia, and what we will be able to see from her in the future.
