World Heritage Week is a city-wide celebration of the World Heritage City designation of Philadelphia. This year, we are shaping the program around the idea of Sankofa, a cultural ideology originating in west Africa (Ghana). Sankofa represents the practice of looking into the past for inspiration and taking what is of value into the future. GPA will promote both in-person and virtual events and programs throughout the week to celebrate the global heritages of Philadelphia.

On August 19, we’re bringing the islands to you! Join us for the 32nd Annual Philadelphia Caribbean Festival for a day full of island culture.

A unique, interactive chamber music experience with members of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. Performed in the round, a host will provide background and insight on each work and lead conversations with the musicians between pieces. The performance concludes with a casual audience Q&A.

In this interactive assembly, Ssuuna introduces students to the artistry of African culture through dance, music, and storytelling. Sharing music from his native Uganda using authentic African instruments such as the thumb piano and one-stringed fiddle, Ssuuna inspires students to compare and contrast cultures and to learn the importance of respecting cultural differences. The program ends in celebration as students play alongside Ssuuna and learn a song in Luganda, the language of Uganda. Free with Museum Admission.

This six-piece Brazilian jazz group of Philadelphia features vibraphone, electric and nylon string guitars, bass guitar, drums, percussion and saxophone. Inspired by the music of Brazil, the group creates a spacious, welcoming sound.
