On April 11, my professor, Dr. Di Giovine, and I picked up artifacts from lenders in Philadelphia. Giovine is the Director of the Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology and is teaching a course in which students curate a museum exhibition. This year’s exhibition is “Beyond the Bell: Philadelphia’s Many Heritages.” With the help of GPA, the museum is connecting with diverse communities to tell the story of the mosaic of cultures within the Philadelphia region. 

An exchange between Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and Dr. Richard Hodges, President of the American University of Rome and former Director of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, resulted in an intensive effort to gain international recognition of Philadelphia’s historical contributions to the world. Nutter visited the Penn Museum and Hodges, then Director, mentioned the World Heritage Cities Programme. The mayor took notice.

After two highly successful runs in 2018 and 2019, the Organization of World Heritage Cities is back with its “Young Traveling Scholarship” program. Aimed specifically at young adults between the ages of 18 and 28 years, the 1,000-euro scholarship enables selected participants to explore UNESCO’s World Heritage Cities in North America and Europe and document their firsthand experience to explain why their heritage needs to be preserved.

Global Philadelphia will hold both in-person and virtual events and programs May 22-27 to honor Philadelphia’s seventh year as a World Heritage City, including a new community mural unveiling.

On October 15th of last year, the first UNESCO Trail was launched to digitally connect thirteen UNESCO-designated places. Amongst these thirteen, biospheres, global geoparks, and creative cities were included along with six World Heritage Sites. Scottish Parliament member Neil Gray began a fascinating virtual conference by celebrating this achievement and thanking the staff of all six of Scotland’s WHS that would be presenting.

When it comes to the history of our country's founding and the American Revolution, you can't go without mentioning George Washington. Washington became our nation's first president (1789 - 97) and, with the new U.S. Constitution ratified, the new republic was beginning to legitimize as a sovereign independent power.

Versailles was the home to the kings of France and the French monarchy from Louis XIV to Louis XVI as well as Napoleon Bonaparte. The Palace and Park of Versailles were built by several generations of architects, sculptors, painters, ornamentalists, and landscape artists to represent the perfect model of a royal residence.
