Date:
Thursday, June 4, 2020 - 12:00pm - 2:00pm U.S. immigration and taxation landscapes have changed in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our distinguished panel of experts in these areas will walk us through some of the important nuances we need to know and communicate to our constituents.
IMMIGRATION - Global migration has ground to a halt as a result of the pandemic. Embassies and Consulates remain closed. Travel restrictions rest with those based in countries ranging from China to the UK and the Trump administration, through executive order, is further limiting legal migration to the US. Left with many questions are foreign nationals in the US facing the loss or furlough of work and employers balancing the needs of businesses and the want to assist their foreign national staff. Pragmatic solutions in a changing landscape are hard to find, but understanding the nuances of migration patterns during a pandemic will help guide those that need help the most during this trying time.
TAXATION - The shelter in place requirements, shut down of US businesses, closing of federal offices and restrictive travel have resulted in severe economic consequences and potential tax problems for resident and non-resident individual and business taxpayers. Congress has responded enacting several tax provisions within the CARES Act. The IRS has responded to this challenge with various administrative pronouncements. The tax law changes and administrative pronouncements are taxpayer friendly and therefore, it is important that taxpayers and advisors understand their implications in order to maximize their benefit. On the other hand, many individuals who are no longer able to travel, have found themselves staying and or working in cities and states for an extended period, which raises the concern of establishing residency in a state.
