Author Joan E. Howard is the director of Petite Plaisance, the former home of French novelist Marguerite Yourcenar and her American partner Grace Frick. Frick was a literary scholar who introduced Yourcenar's work to English-language readers all over the world thanks to her award-winning translation of the novel Mémoires d'Hadrien in 1954.

Joan E. Howard's book We met in Paris is about Grace Frick and her relationship with Marguerite Yourcenar - a relationship that has often been mirepresented in European-written biographies. We are shown Frick as a person of substance in her own right, and the book paints a portrait of both women that is at once intimate and scrupulously documented. It contains a great deal of new information that will disrupt long-held beliefs about Yourcenar and may even shock some of her scholars and fans.
