Untaming Wild Tongues: Spanglish Monologuing Workshop

Thursday, May 5, 2022 - 6:00pm - 7:30pm
Online via Zoom
United States

As shown in Quiara Alegria Hudes’ memoir, My Broken Language–the 2022 One Book, One Philadelphia selection–our languages serve as a bridge between us and the rest of the world. This act of bridging grows even more relevant for multilingual speakers and those with experiences of being ni de aquí, ni de allá--neither from here, nor there. In this online, 90-minute monologue-writing workshop, we’ll tell our stories in ways that validate our use of hybrid language as a form of self-expression.

Drawing inspiration from My Broken Language and other works from key Latinx voices, we’ll brainstorm and develop 3-5 minute personal monologues. This is a generative space open to participants at all levels or with no prior experience in creative writing. This workshop aims to help bilinguals embrace and celebrate bilingualism and its different manifestations in the ways we express ourselves. Though the workshop is designed around the use of Spanglish, anyone who surfs between English and another language is welcome to participate.
