Philadelphia Tango Festival

Thursday, June 2, 2022 - 12:00pm - Sunday, June 5, 2022 - 3:00am
Lithuanian Music Hall 2715 E. Allegheny Ave
United States

The  Philadelphia Tango Festival returns, after a three-year hiatus, with programs and performances that make this year’s festival, the 10th edition, stronger than ever! Taking place from Thursday, June 2 through late night Sunday, June 5, 2022, it is one of the largest tango festivals in the country, with debut performances of artists from around the world and a special salute to women.

The festival draws hundreds of tango dancers who come from all over the United States to Philadelphia to participate in tango dance workshops, concerts, social dances, lectures on tango subjects, tango films, panel discussions, and more.  In addition, the festival provides an opportunity to purchase tango clothing and shoes with a variety of vendors.

Activities are offered for beginner dancers. There is also a pass for those only interested in only non-dance activities, like concerts and films. The festival takes place at the Lithuanian Music Hall in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia at 2715 E. Allegheny Ave. with a 5,500 square foot ballroom, as well as many other program spaces.  The event also includes one after-party occurring at the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School (the presenting organization) in Fishtown.   Complete details and tickets are available at:

For the first time, the festival has a media partnership with NBC10/Telemundo62, and the pianists will perform on a Steinway Grand Piano, made possible by Jacobs Music Company, one of the nation’s most respected piano merchants and the Tri-state region’s exclusive representative for new and authentically restored Steinway & Sons pianos, Steinway’s Boston and Essex pianos.

The 2022 Philadelphia Tango Festival is organized around two themes that distinguish it from other tango festivals:

THE FESTIVAL CELEBRATES THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF WOMEN IN TANGO with an all-female cast of teachers, dance performers and main event DJs.

●         As a completely improvised dance, tango relies on defined roles of “leader” and “follower.”  Historically, male dancers were the “leaders” and received the lion’s share of accolades, revenue and fame.  The 2022 Festival seeks to celebrate and support a sea change in tango worldwide, a new reality where tango roles (leader and follower) are independent of gender roles, and where all genders and sexualities are equally welcomed and respected.  The featured festival artists are women who are world-renowned as teachers and performers, and who have all done important work as tango organizers: advocating for women’s rights in tango, creating queer tango spaces, and creating events that subvert gender stereotypes.

● We are proud to present one of the most illustrious line-up of tango bands ever put together by a festival in the United States.  The festival features huge crowd-pleasers like Argentine artists Juan Villarreal and Patricio Crom, who are making their U.S. debut at the festival.  And it features the most prominent full tango orchestra in the U.S., the Tipica Messiez, making its first appearance since before the pandemic.  In total, the festival offers three seated concerts and five live music social dances, presented by 12 different musicians, the majority of whom are traveling from Buenos Aires in order to perform.

More about the Festival:

In total, the 2022 Philadelphia Tango Festival presents 40 different activities including 20 tango dance workshops (with four aimed at total beginners), three seated concerts, five social dances, all with both live music and expertly DJed recorded music, two panel discussions, one lecture, two documentary film screenings and three yoga classes. The festival starts on Thurday, June 2 with a concert at 8 pm, and then social dance (called “milonga”) until 2 am.  Over the next three days, activities begin at noon, and continue into the early morning hours, with activities ending between 3 am and 7 am!  You can view the full festival schedule here:
