Holiday House Tour: Japanese New Year正月 (shōgatsu)

The Japanese House has never looked like this before!

Shofuso will be decorated with ancient winter symbols like traditional Japanese greens, ikebana flower arrangements, straw and paper ornaments, and a kagami mochi 鏡餅 (mirror rice cake), for Japanese New Year正月 (shōgatsu).

Borrow our warm slippers and tour the traditional-style Japanese house while sipping warm green tea, or visit the nationally-ranked garden, weather permitting, and experience a Japanese New Year at Shofuso for the first time. On December 6, you can take Fairmount Park Conservancy’s Holly Trolley and visit seven park houses, including Shofuso, decorated for the season.

To continue the Japanese holiday fun, bring your family to Celebrate: Oshogatsu New Year’s Family Workshop on Sunday, December 14 from 1pm-3pm at Sakura Pavilion.

Learn about the holiday while creating nengajo 年賀状 (New Year postcards), otoshidama-burkuroお年玉 (envelopes for New Year’s monetary gifts to children) and a mini ornament based on the kadomatsu門松 (New Year tree).

Register in advance to ensure your family’s place at this cultural workshop. More info at www.shofuso.com/event-calendar/
