Location:
University of Pennsylvania's Fisher-Bennett Hall, 3340 Walnut Street
Philadelphia, PA 19104

The Global Leadership Seminar is open to all rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. This four-day seminar will focus on the key issues impacting the rise of Africa as a leading competitor in the global marketplace.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Universal access to equitable and quality education in Africa and the central role it plays in achieving the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals
  • The impact of technology on Africa’s economic, political and social development
  • The rapidly growing influence of China and India’s economic presence in Africa

The Seminar will feature engaging guest lecturers, student-led breakout discussions, and an opportunity to participate in a live international student video-conference with high school students from across the African continent. The optional fifth day -- Friday, August 2 -- offers a field trip to Washington, D.C., where students will have the opportunity to visit key international NGOs, political organizations and cultural institutions working in Africa.

Additionally, participants will take part in a half-day international crisis simulation, during which they will role-play the decision-making processes of leaders from four countries – The Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Africa, China and Belgium. Using online resources, one-on-one negotiation skills, and a newly acquired understanding of African issues, the players will seek solutions to an unfolding international crisis centered in Africa.
