by Giuliano Montaldo, 1987, 107’

Set in Ferrara and in a nearby seaside resort in 1938, the plot follows a Jewish student and a doctor who suffer persecution in Fascist Italy. The film is an adaptation of Giorgio Bassani’s novel (1958) The Gold Rimmed Spectacles (Gli occhiali d'oro) and particularly interesting when compared with Il giardino dei Finzi -Contini (1962), on which De Sica based his 1971 famous film.
This film is part of a trilogy about pre-war Ferrara and won two Golden Osellas for Best Costume Design and Best Set Design at the Venice Film Festival in 1987.
Again, another must-see for cinema and music lovers: this delicate and poetic story is combined with a great score by Morricone, for which the composer won a David di Donatello Prize.
