Legendary Nina Simone was strong, defiant, artistic, and elegant, as we hear in her song, FOUR WOMEN! Nina also brought her distinctive arrangements and soul to pop and rock songs by musicians such as Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne" and John Lennon’s “Here Comes The Sun.” Vocalist Wendy Grantham and pianist Adam Faulk take the helm at bringing these hidden treasures of "another side of Nina" to Woodmere.
THE SMOOTH BREEZIN’ MUSIC OF GEORGE BENSON
SEPTEMBER 18
Guitarist Kelvin Nathaniel takes us to the heart of “Smooth Jazz” with his focus on the music of one of the great jazz guitarists, George Benson. Enjoy an evening that demonstrates how Benson widened the jazz audience and created a sound of exciting tranquility with tunes such as “Breezin”, “Moody’s Mood For Love,” “The Greatest,” and more.
THE MUSIC OF ISAAC HAYES: HOT BUTTERED MEMPHIS SOUL
SEPTEMBER 25
Vocalist Roy Richardson performs with The Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble and brings to life the rich, baritone voice of Isaac Hayes. Known as a landmark in soul music, Hayes could convey the power of romantic reality, making him one of the most appealing of love balladeers. He was also a prolific composer, arranger, and orchestrator whose soundtrack for the movie “Shaft" won an Academy Award.
AL GREEN: A WOMAN'S POINT OF VIEW (INDOORS)
OCTOBER 9
Vocalist Jackie Greggs joins The Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble in this tribute to Al Green. Most people know the romantic stylings of Al Green, his way with words, and his ability to convey the excitement and adventure of relationships. Greggs's rich and stylish vocals will provide a woman's perspective on the joy and mystique of romance with Green's tunes, “Let’s Stay Together,” “Love and Happiness,” and many more.
MOTOWN MEETS JAZZ (INDOORS)
OCTOBER 16
One of Woodmere’s favorite programs. Motown Meets Jazz explores the treasure chest of Motown melodies and memories. Vocalists Sherry Butler and Roy Richardson join The Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble to create an exciting evening of music with songs like “Papa Was A Rolling Stone”, “Ooh Baby Baby”, “I Can’t Help Myself” and many more.
TRIBUTE TO MILES DAVIS: ALWAYS MILES AHEAD (INDOORS)
OCTOBER 23
A tribute to the classic side of Miles Davis, the music of his quintet between the mid-1950s and into the sixties. Trumpeter Marcell Bellinger will recall some of Miles’ more popular tunes and performances such as "Bye, Bye, Blackbird" and more from that time period. Always adventurous, Davis was an icon who embraced all the musical challenges that confronted him to become one of the most innovative and influential trumpet players in the world.
