Annenberg Center Presents: Dance Brazil

Date:
Thursday, March 22, 2012 - 7:30pm - Saturday, March 24, 2012 - 11:00pm
Location:
Zellerbach Theatre, Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts 3680 Walnut Street
Philadelphia 19104
United States

For more than 30 years, DanceBrazil has thrilled audiences throughout the world with a dazzling fusion of Afro-Brazilian culture, live music, contemporary dance and Capoeira, the African dance/martial arts form that evolved in colonial Brazil as a means of fighting enslavement. Enjoy the Philadelphia premiere of Dance like a Fight - Fight like a Dance, a sensuous, fast-paced new work that draws upon the ongoing dialogue of intense cultural rituals, followed by the revival of the hit work Batuke, a hard-driving piece exploding with the rhythms created by smooth samba steps, capoeira lethal kicks and the stick dance Maculel.

Under the direction of Artistic Director Jelon Vieira, DanceBrazil will wow audiences with its "crowd-pleasing style of high-octane, high-flying, pelvis swiveling choreography" (New York Times) and its colorful costumes, acrobatic virtuosity and soul-stirring rhythms.

On March 23, join Annenberg Center for an INSIGHTS event before or after this performance. INSIGHTS is the Annenberg Center’s performance enhancement events program, featuring Penn professors, area specialists and artists.
